The team confirmed on Sunday that Reinbold passed away peacefully on Saturday, surrounded by his family.
In a statement, Dreyer & Reinbold Racing expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their leader and friend. Brian Gauker, General Manager of the Dreyer & Reinbold dealerships, said Reinbold treated everyone like family and built a workplace culture centered on loyalty, respect, and care for others. The family of dealerships includes BMW, Infiniti, Mini, Subaru, and Volkswagen locations across Indianapolis and Greenwood.
Reinbold, along with Eric DeBord, founded DRR in 1999. The team quickly made its mark in IndyCar competition, earning an early victory when driver Robbie Buhl won the 2000 season opener. Over the years, DRR became a respected presence in the Indy 500, consistently qualifying entries and competing at a high level on one of motorsport’s biggest stages.
Beyond racing, Reinbold was also a successful businessman and lifelong Indianapolis resident who helped build and expand a family of automobile dealerships across Indiana. Those who knew him describe him as passionate, driven, and deeply committed to both his work and his people.
Tributes poured in from across the racing world following news of his passing. Drivers who raced under the DRR banner, including Conor Daly, Jack Harvey, and Rinus VeeKay, shared emotional messages remembering his leadership, generosity, and love for the sport. They spoke of a team owner who made everyone feel valued and who carried a deep respect for IndyCar racing and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Former driver Ryan Hunter-Reay also remembered Reinbold as a true friend and competitor who brought passion and integrity to everything he did. IndyCar officials echoed those sentiments, describing him as a leader who guided others with character and humility.
Dennis Reinbold will be remembered not only for his contributions to motorsports and business, but also for the relationships he built and the respect he earned throughout his life. His legacy will continue through Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, his dealerships, and the many people whose lives he impacted.
